  • Artist Statement

Curious by nature Andrew is constantly evolving and learning. Pencil and Watercolours paints are his favourite traditional media and he has embraced new technology using Photoshop and Illustrator to develop ideas in new directions. He explores many avenues including portraiture, landscapes, still-life, and Botanical illustration embracing new challenges. He works in the pursuit of many ideals and concerns, creating paintings drawn from life and his imagination.

The painting reflects the words of the poem Mermaid which accompanies the piece. Addiction is seen as a brain disorder characterized by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli despite adverse consequences. Addiction to Love, a person or a drug. Addiction has an astoundingly high toll on individuals. Mermaids may have been influenced by the Sirens of Greek mythology and have been a popular subject of art and literature. I believe they are used as a metaphor for the desire to do something, especially something wrong or unwise.
