Mik Scarlett by Barbara Hulme

Mik’s story in his own words:

"It’s always strange writing these bio things. I started writing them when I was trying to break into the music industry. They were full of hyperbole and quoteable sound bites. The same went for my time as TV presenter and journalist. Using words to create a persona that was a great public facing image. Today I’m still doing it, as the CoCEO of the charity Phab. Words to highlight our work, promote the rights of disabled people and champion equality.

But who am I? In truth I’m just a normal guy, born in Luton, loved by his mother, played with his great brother, with fantastic friends before moving to London to pursue his dream in the big city. I met and fell n love with a wonderful woman and have lived a life that I could never have dreamed of as a disabled child growing up in the 60s and 70s.

To be featured in this exhibition is another moment in that charmed life and I’m honoured to be part of it. Showing society the reality of being disabled, that we are all people, different with different impairments yet sharing this lived experience of being disabled."
